FEDERALIST 1800-1820

Similar to a Georgian style but much less ornate. Sometimes called "toothpick" Georgian because of its narrow pilasters and columns. Designed with narrow pilasters and columns, usually three floors, with a low hipped roof. This style often contain balustrade, lintels and fan light windows. Chestnut Street in Salem and the Beverly Historical Society buildings are classic examples of Federalist architecture. The major architects of this style were Bulfinch from Boston, and McIntire from Salem.
