SECOND EMPIRE 1860-1890

The second Empire style was borrowed from France. It is named for the reign of Napoleon the III. The mansard roof increased the head room and light, creating an additional usable floor. Public buildings usually include classical pediments, balustrades, and windows flanked by columns or pilasters. Columns are usually paired. Other characteristics include Quoins, belt course, slate roofs, and window molding. The old city hall in Boston is a classic example of Second Empire architecture.
