THREE-DECKER 1880-1910
The " Three-Decker" house originated in New England in the later part of the nineteenth century. Although "Architectural Purists" believe that the Three-Decker was derived from the French Flat apartment house, it more likely evolved from Mansard-Style Row houses, with their characteristic third floor occupancy. The Three-Decker now provided inexpensive housing for three families in a relatively small vertical space.
These Three-Story buildings usually provide five or six rooms on each floor. Many of the Three-Deckers characteristically place front porches on each floor.
