Nathan Dane


Nathan Dane was born in Ipswich Massachusetts, 1752 and lived most of his life in Beverly. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1782, a Continental Congress delegate in 1785, 1786 and 1787, and a member of the state Senate in 1790. Dane founded Harvard Law School, now one of the most prestigious law schools in the world. One of the founders of the Massachusetts Temperance Society, Dane helped establish ethics for alcohol in society. Dane was the author of the Northwest Ordinance, a treaty that the slave free territories of the Northwest of the Ohio River. This ordinance also set the standards for the requirements of a territory to become a state.
