John Glover

John Glover was born on November 5, 1732, in Salem, Massachusetts. He later moved to Marblehead. In 1773 he was appointed a Captain by Governor Thomas Hutchinson. Two years later, Glover was ordered to Beverly to help protect that port against British attacks. While stationed there, Glover, under the request of General Washington, obtained and equipped two small naval vessels. These were the forerunners of Washington's Navy. This was an important act because without him and his troops coming to Beverly to help hold of the British, citizens of Beverly would not have been able to reconstruct ships into battle ships. This in effect, might have stopped the navy from forming. When Glover and his regiment left the ports of Beverly, they went to Long Island, New York where they organized and supervised the evacuation of 9,000 continental troops.
