Robert Rantoul, Jr.

 

Robert Rantoul Jr. was born in Beverly on August 13, 1805 and died in Washington D.C. on August 7, 1852. He was a dedicated abolitionist and an associate of Horace Mann in improving public schools. He was the second U.S Senator elected from Beverly, and also drafted an important charter and acquired the land grant from the Federal government to build a railroad from Chicago to New Orleans.
