Sydney Winslow

Sidney Winslow was born in Lynn, MA. He established the United Shoe Machinery on February 7, 1899 which opened and became the United Shoe Machinery Corporation on September 25, 1903. The Shoe received the reputation as the most enlightened employer in New England. The building itself was clean, spacious, airy, and well lighted. They tried to prevent injuries any way they could and had a hospital attached if injuries did occur. The Shoe had an overall good work atmosphere and people wanted to work there. The workers were provided with clubs from golf to cricket and a shooting range.

The patent for the machines allowed for a decrease of labor costs from 5.65 dollars to 74 cents per shoe. This made the workers' salaries higher. In 1911, Beverly had as a whole, a higher earnings than in any other city in the state. The Shoe brought workers to the area and demands for housing. The housing demands developed areas of Beverly, such as Goat Hill and Ryal Side. The Shoe brought people, development, and a better economy to Beverly.
