REPORT OF SUPERVISOR OF MANUAL TRAINING IN THE GRADES

My dear Mr. Chace: It is my pleasure to submit the annual report of the Supervisor of Manual Training in the Beverly Schools.

There are two distinct types of work in this department; namely, the practical arts of the Briscoe eighth grade boys and the manual training for the boys of the seventh and eighth grades of the entire city. We believe that boys "learn to do by doing" and with this in mind our work has been of a most practical nature.

It was our aim to give each boy an incentive to work and our projects appealed to every boy in the manual training work of the seventh and eighth grades. The boys seemed particularly interested in these major projects: namely, magazine racks, boats, umbrella stands and foot stools. Interest never lagged even though the boys spent but six short hours of every month in the manual training room.

Mr. Robert Waite's work is worthy of commendation in this department.

In the practical arts class at the Briscoe School we have accomplished many "man-size" jobs. The boys have had an opportunity to build doors, repair windows and other jobs which required a great deal of knowledge concerning the manipulation of the important carpenter's tools. We have been ready at every call to do repair work in an emergency.

Mr. Roger Houston has been authorized to observe in the Practical Arts classes and this already has proved helpful and satisfactory.

We appreciate the co-operation, which the School Department and Mr. Chace have given our department.
