| Students used a wide variety
of tools throughout the project. |
The tools used in building stonewalls
were quite simple: crow bar, hammer, spade and stone boat
to be pulled by oxen. Susan Allport calls oxen the unsung
heroes of New England stonewalls, because they pulled
the heavy stone boats. Oxen were better suited than horses
for the task because they were low maintenance and less
susceptible to injury and disease.
