Project Apprentice to History (PATH)

As a result of their research, PATH students have produced several historical databases throughout the years. These databases are presented free through this website. Also listed here are historic documents collected by students in other classes that will be useful to researchers.

THE LIBERATOR
This index and compilation of articles from William Lloyd Garrison's abolitionist newspaper The Liberator (1831-1865) includes those dealing with voluntary associations as well as prominent African Americans of the time.

TAX ASSESSMENT RECORDS
, 1850. Boston City Archives.
These records from the Boston City Archives show residents labeled "colored" from Wards 2, 4, 5 and 6 from the year 1850. The records have been digitized (by Ryan Morse '04) and transcribed into a database by Thomas Scully.

AFRICAN AMERICANS IN BOSTON'S BEACON HILL AND WEST END, 1850
This database, now being compiled, will link names from the Boston City Directories in and around 1850 with the 1850 federal census. William Lloyd Garrison's The Liberator, an abolitionist newspaper that existed from 1831 to 1865, will be examined for evidence of these African Americans and their membership in voluntary associations.

RANTOUL STREET CENSUS DATA, 1910 & 1920
Rantoul Street is one of two main streets in Beverly. It consists of mostly multi-family dwellings and small stores. Rantoul Street has traditionally been the first area of domicile for a myriad of immigrant groups. Over the period 1900 - 1920 roughly one thousand people lived on this street. Two students have transcribed complete census information on every man, woman, and child living on Rantoul Street in the census years 1910 and 1920. The individual census data for these residents has been incorporated into a database using these censuses. On a very superficial level, this will enable anyone to research any Rantoul Street resident during this period. On a more sophisticated level, we will be using this database to trace such demographic aspects as upward mobility, fecundity, population density, etc.

BEVERLY CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS
This database links local regiment lists with federal census data. Local civil war enlistment lists from 1861 to 1865 were used along with the 1860 Census to provide a more complete demographic picture of these men.

BEVERLY EDUCATIONAL ARCHIVES
This online counterpart to the Beverly Educational Archives, opened in 2003, features a unique collection of digitized documents from Beverly Public Schools. Records date from 1768 to present.

NATHAN DANE DIGITIZATION PROJECT
This component of the Nathan Dane Collaborative includes documents from Nathan Dane's papers at the Beverly Historical Sociey Commissions, Letters to Dane, Letters From Dane (1786-1830), Notifications (1785-1830), and other Dane papers.

BEVERLY POSTCARDS
A growing collection of digitized postcards featuring Beverly's "golden era", from 1900 to 1920. Also a gateway to Beverly Public Library's large digitized collecton available through the NOBLE catalog.
